Crimes, Statutes, and Examples

Only the listed types of crimes can be reported via our online reporting system.  Please read this page and ensure the crime you want to report falls into one of these categories.  Click the statute number for more.

HARASSMENT: 

C.R.S. § 18-9-111 

An unknown person will not leave you alone or is threatening or annoying you. For example, you keep finding notes on your car at work threatening you if keep parking in the same spot. Or, an unknown person keeps leaving threatening messages on your phone.

 

You may not use this report type if you have suspect information. For example, you are certain or reasonably suspect that it is your coworker, John Doe, leaving the notes on your car. If you believe you clearly know who the suspect is, please call 719-687-9652 to request a deputy. 

 

IDENTITY THEFT: 

C.R.S. § 18-5-902

An unknown person is using your identity fraudulently. For example, you are notified by the IRS that someone has filed a tax return in our name, you have received a credit denial letter for a credit card you did not apply for, or your personal information was used to make purchases online or out of state.

If someone used your credit card, debit card, or personal check to purchase items in Colorado Springs, you must call 719-444-7000.

LOST PROPERTY:

Not a crime - report only

You have lost or mislaid your property. For example, you spend the day running errands and when you get home you notice your sunglasses are missing. You cannot specifically remember where you last saw them. 

 

If you can remember the last location of the item, do not use this report type; report the item as a theft. For example, you leave your phone on the table at a restaurant. After leaving you realize you forgot your phone. Upon returning to the restaurant the phone is gone and has not been turned into the business - REPORT AS THEFT.

THEFT:

C.R.S. § 18-4-401 

Someone has stolen your property. For example, you come home and find your barbeque grill is missing. Or, you notice jewelry missing after hosting a party in your home.  If someone has forcibly broken into or entered your unlocked home, detached garage, vehicle, or shed - STOP and call 719-687-9652 to request a deputy respond. 

THEFT OF AUTO PARTS:

C.R.S. § 42-5-104 

Someone has stolen parts from your car. The parts can be factory parts or aftermarket parts. This can include but is not limited to rims, engine parts, and exterior/interior parts, and the radio. If they broke into or entered your vehicle and only stole property that was not physically attached to your car (backpack, garage remote, registration paperwork, seat covers, etc.) then do not use this report type. Report this incident as a Burglary of a Motor Vehicle by calling 719-687-9652. 

THEFT OF BICYCLE:

C.R.S. § 18-4-401 

Someone has stolen your bicycle. If the person has only stolen items from your bicycle (headlamp, tools, etc.), do not use this report type. Please report those items using the "Theft" report type. 

THEFT OF A LICENSE PLATE:

C.R.S. § 42-5-104 

Someone has stolen one or both of the license plates from your vehicle. It does not matter if the licenses plates were expired. You may also report a missing temporary tag.  You will need the license plate and VIN number for the vehicle that had the plates stolen.  

 

*IMPORTANT NOTE: Once reported, the license plate or temporary tag will be entered into national law enforcement databases as "stolen". To avoid an unnecessary interaction with officers, you MUST contact your local office of the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain new license plates or a temporary tag.  DO NOT DRIVE a vehicle with a license plate attached that has been reported and entered as stolen.  If you locate the lost or stolen license plate or temporary tag, immediately call 719-687-9652 to request a deputy to cancel the information out of the system.

TRESPASS:

C.R.S. § 18-4-502 ; C.R.S. § 18-4-503 ; C.R.S. § 18-4-504 

An unknown person has trespassed on your property. For example, you find items behind the shed in your backyard that lead you to believe someone has been sleeping at the location. Or, you notice the gate to your backyard has been opened. 

You may not use this report type if you have suspect information. For example, you are certain or reasonably suspect that it is your neighbor, two houses up the street, has been the one going into your yard.  If you believe you know who the suspect is, please call 719-687-9652 to request a deputy. 

VANDALISM:

C.R.S. § 18-4-501 

An unknown person has damaged your property or vehicle. For example, someone shot out your car window with a BB gun, your fence was spray painted, your lawn decor was broken, etc. Do not use this report type, if, in addition to the damage, your property was also stolen. Please use the "Theft" report type or the "Theft of Auto Parts" if a car is involved. 

 

You may not use this report type if you have suspect information. For example, you are certain or reasonably suspect that it is your neighbor, two houses up the street, has been the one going into your yard.  If you believe you know who the suspect is, please call 719-687-9652 to request a deputy. 

GAS DRIVE-OFF:

C.R.S. 18-4-401

An unknown suspect has driven off from a vehicle fueling station and not paid for their fuel.
