COUPLE ARRESTED IN STOLEN CARS AFTER PASSING FAKE MONEY
Teller County, CO, December 2, 2020– Teller County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted by Woodland Park Police arrested a couple driving two stolen vehicles and passing altered “prop money” at local businesses.
At approximately 1:32 pm the Teller County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the clerk at the Conoco in Florissant, Colorado stating a party had attempted to pass counterfeit bills at the station. The clerk was able to give a description and license plate number of a white Subaru the suspect was driving. Deputies responded and learned that a silver Chevrolet Silverado pickup pulling a trailer may have also been involved.
Deputies attempted to locate the vehicles and notified Woodland Park Police that the vehicles may be in their jurisdiction. At approximately 2:40 pm Woodland Park Police located the vehicles near the Taco Bell where they had just passed one of the fake $20 bills.
Deputies responded to the location taking a male, identified as Stephen McMahon 39, and a female, identified as Julia Hartman 25, into custody.
Further investigation revealed that Subaru sedan was stolen out of Colorado Springs and the Chevrolet pickup was stolen out of Longmont.
The Teller County Sheriff's Office would like to remind business owners, cashiers, and anyone else who takes money to be especially vigilant in checking the validity of US Currency during this Holiday Season. The couple is known to have passed altered prop money at five different business in Teller County and Woodland Park and they were booked into the Teller County Jail, charged with:
Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft- a Class 4 Felony
Six Counts of Forgery- a Class 5 Felony
Seven Counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument- a Class 6 Felony
