On 14 July 2021, at about 8:34 pm, Teller County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were requested to assist Colorado Springs Metro Explosives Unit and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Agents in securing a scene where old explosives were discovered needing emergency destruction on a property located on Quartz Road in the Upper Twin Rocks Subdivision.

Teller County Deputies secured access into the area and a Reverse 911 was sent out to potentially affected homes in the area asking that they shelter in place and stay away from windows as a precaution.

Technicians from the Explosives Unit were able to safely dispose of all the explosives with operations ending at about 2:57 am.

Teller County has a long history of mining operations dating back to the 1800’s and citizens are reminded not to touch or move potential old blasting caps or explosive materials and to report them to the Teller County Sheriff’s Office.
