Undersheriff John Gomes grew up in Colorado Springs, and graduated from Harrison High School.  He then married his wife Janet and they have just celebrated their 42nd year of marriage.  They both currently reside in Woodland Park where they have lived for the past 33 years.  They have one grown daughter, Angela, and two grandchildren.  John joined the United States Air Force in 1975 and after serving for 12 years as a Law Enforcement Specialist and another couple years in the active reserves, and after serving his country during the first Desert Storm, he pursued his civilian career in Law Enforcement.


John attended Pikes Peak Community College where he graduated with an AAS Degree in Criminal Justice.  He also holds a BA Degree in Criminal Justice from Grantham University.  He is a graduate of the 194th Session of the FBI National Academy.  John worked for the Colorado State Patrol and in 1987 joined the Woodland Park Police Department.


During his employment, John has served as a Patrol Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Commander and the Deputy Chief of Police.  He worked many years as an undercover narcotics officer while assigned to a metropolitan task force.  John has also worked as a general crimes detective, a domestic violence team supervisor, a reserve liaison officer, professional standards supervisor, major crimes supervisor and as the department's Public Information Officer (PIO).  John was an Adjunct Instructor at the Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy.  He also served on the El Paso/Teller E-911 board.    John served as a Director of the boards for both the Northeast Teller County Fire District and the Children's Advocacy Center in Colorado Springs.  He served as a board member of the Fourth Judicial District's Victim Assistance and Law Enforcement (VALE) in El Paso/Teller County. 


John retired from the Woodland Park Police Department in 2014 after serving for 28 years.  John joined the Teller County Sheriff’s Office at the end of 2014.  In 2016 he retired and after a short retirement returned and currently serves as the Undersheriff.  Since his appointment as the undersheriff he has volunteered to serve on the Colorado Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC) training committee for the training of Undersheriff’s.  He is still an active member of the FBI National Academy.  He is also a member of the Colorado Springs Special Investigative fund that is managed by the El Paso County Sheriff.  He is an active member of the Colorado Springs Law Enforcement Military Collaboration that meets monthly and an active member of our local American Legion Post 1980.
